SEARCH FOR GOD...BUT WHO IS OR WHAT IS GOD?

by Jana Silk

Talking about God is a deeply subjective and profound topic that has been contemplated and explored throughout human history in various ways. The understanding of this concept varies greatly depending on one’s personal beliefs, religious background, cultural influences, and individual experiences.

Some people describe God as the Creator of existence, for others God represents a source of ultimate truth, guidance, and spiritual connection. Different religions and belief systems have their own understanding of God, with varying attributes, names, and roles.

I used to have a problem with the word “God” since I was a child. Every summer holiday I spent with my grandmother. She lived in a small village, not far from our own home. Her days were filled with simple joys and her heart overflowed with faith. Our day always started and finished with a prayer. I could never understand how much satisfaction she derived from simply holding her rosary beads, gently squeezing each bead between her fingers, and reciting mantras that held no meaning for me. She was missing two fingers on her right hand; thus, she would typically hold the rosary in her left hand. Every time she prayed; a remarkable transformation came over here face. It was as she was bathed in an ethereal light, gently swaying her body from side to side or back and forth.

She hoped that one day I would become a nun, believing it to be the most fulfilling path I could pursue. At around noon each day, while she cooked our lunch, she handed me a Bible and asked me to read it for her. I admired her unwavering faith but couldn’t quite comprehend the meaning behind the word “God”. It seemed intangible and distant. Frustration grew within me, and eventually I closed the book on this topic, setting it aside for a long while.

In the realm of spirituality, it is not uncommon to encounter spiritual teachers who are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and understanding of God.

As I have journeyed through life, I have also had the opportunity to meet and learn from a few individuals. Some are genuine and well-meaning; others may not possess the same intentions.

There were moments when I questioned whether I would ever experience the presence of God in the same way as others did. Despite not knowing exactly what others felt, I could only rely on their descriptions of their own experiences.

Often, I felt inadequate in this aspect, as I was repeatedly reminded that I was disconnected, should refrain from speaking, and even rethink or change my personal values to achieve this so-called connection.

It was during the last Christmas season that I had a profound encounter with a humble and unassuming woman. Her presence and words ignited a spark within me, forever altering my perspective on this subject and instilling in me a newfound desire to live my life in a different way. She simply uttered these words:

“Don’t be afraid to embrace your ordinary existence and live your life with humility. Each of us is inherently ordinary, no individual is more superior than other. Everything meant for you will naturally unfold. Your destiny is predetermined from the moment you are born.”

She went on to say, “You don’t need to seek connection with God, for God already resides within us. God simply is.”

Our individual spiritual journey is unique and deeply personal.

It is vital to embrace life as it is, with all its imperfections, without resistance, and letting go of the belief that something needs fixing. As we surrender to the constant flow of existence, we realize that these so-called imperfections are essential for cultivating tolerance and empathy towards others.

We embark on an endless journey of growth and wisdom, recognizing that judging others solely based on their intellect and abilities signifies there is still much to learn.

The true essence of “God” does not lay in scholarly definitions, complex philosophies, or personal theories and methods that one may have created. The essence of God resides in the void, in the state of nothingness. Its existence manifests and transforms through our lived experiences. God is not an abstract concept, but rather a profound and personal encounter, an experience that unfolds within us.

No matter which path you choose, they all lead to the same destination. There’s no need to stress about finding the right direction, as right direction does not exist. Just let things unfold naturally and trust that you’ll end up where you’re meant to be. Remember, where you are right now is exactly where you need to be.

Don’t get caught up in methods or theories that tell you to change or do something specific to reach your potential. That’s all nonsense. Embrace the flow of your life experiences, stay humble and remain open to what comes your way. When you release the need for control, your life will transform. This isn’t passivity; it’s a journey of humility, acceptance, and joy and that is God in itself.

It is through these qualities that we align ourselves with the divine presence within us and experience the true essence of spirituality. By surrendering to the flow of life and finding contentment in the present moment, we discover the profound connection to the divine that resides within each of us. It is in this state of being that we truly embody the essence of God.

We are all One.
